We ended up cancelling our trip to Ocean City this week since Grandpa is having a hard time recuperating from his total knee replacement, and Jason is headed to Austria for a week starting next Saturday. We are planning to reschedule a beach trip later this year after school is back in session to avoid the crowds / rate gouging.
We had been telling Ryan about the beach all last week, so today we went to Mayo Beach in MD. It's about an hour drive from our house on the South River, near the bay. The beach is open to the public from 11am to 5pm on Sundays during the summer.
Pretty Nice Playground at Mayo Beach
Getting all set up.
We were the third car in, so we had this part of the beach pretty much to ourselves. There were maybe two families and a couple couples out on the beach for our first hour there. We had 100 feet of beach to ourselves for pretty much the entire time we were there.
Elinor will be walking very soon.
Ryan enjoyed playing in the sand. He was a little hesitant to get in the water, but after Daddy carried him out past the waves, he enjoyed playing "splashies," which consisted of Daddy raising him up out of the water and dunking most of him back in and repeating. This amounted to an insane shoulder workout for Daddy.

Elinor also loved playing in the water, and had to be restrained from diving head-first into every wave.

After a couple of hours of beach play, it was time for cookies before the ride home. They also had picnic tables in the shade, but Ryan was cold from playing in the water so we warmed up in the sun a bit before heading out.
Ryan demands more cookies!
Of course, we had to stop by the playground on the way back out. Ryan went down the big slide exactly 10 times before we left. OCD? Nah.....
Not sure which number this was.
Overall, a very pleasant trip. Both kids were great, and enjoyed the water. Not too busy, either. The parking lot was filling up when we left, but the beach was still sparsely populated. Great place to hit the water for a day trip. Small waves for the small kids were a plus.
Proximity to home was even better. A couple hours at the beach is plenty of time to get worn out in the sun and then head home. Several interesting restaurants on the way in and out, but we just ate our picnic in the car on the way back.
Would be a good place to have a family reunion. You can rent the beach area only for $100 a day, but I'm not sure what the backlog is.
There are even houses for sale for decent prices near the beach if Grammy and Poppy are interested!
